Student Spotlight - Lisa Oliver

For this week’s student spotlight, we caught up with Lisa Oliver to find out why she decided to do an online course, alongside her part-time job.

What course are you studying at Perth College UHI, and what year are you currently in?

I recently completed a PDA for Domestic Conveyancing. This course had three units, and I completed it mostly from home during COVID.

What were you doing before you came to college?

I was working as a legal secretary, part time in a legal firm in Edinburgh. This was my return to the workforce for a few years after taking time out to raise my three children, and first job in the legal sector.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I enjoyed the conveyancing work I was doing at the firm, although I wanted some more structure to the learning I was doing on the job. I also hoped this course might open doors for future job opportunities.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

My contact with the tutor, Alison Bruce. She was incredible helping me get set up with the online learning and providing a great amount of support - especially while I was trying to juggle home schooling for three children at the start of COVID.

Has there been any stand out/memorable moments from your course?

I am a total nerd! My favourite thing about studying is getting the results back. I really appreciate when the tutor takes the time to read over my hard work and provide meaningful feedback. It gives me that boost I need to take on the next challenge.

What do you like about the campus?

I was totally online. I enjoyed the creativity of the online programme, especially the quizzes at the end of some of the topics.

I also really enjoyed the case studies presented about property law. It was astounding how many cases have gone to court about potatoes!

Have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI?

Yes, I have. Everything was pretty smooth to get enrolled and there was the right amount of flexibility for me to work, parent and study. My course was very practical and, because I was born overseas, it filled in a lot of my information gaps about all aspects of buying and selling property.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?

Every day I play at least one game of scrabble on my phone. I know so many useless three letter words. Other than that, I’m quite fond of Netflix and also enjoy going for the occasional bike ride.

What are your plans for after you finish your course?

Well my plans have changed a lot, as I’m sure have many other people’s during COVID. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to keep my position in the firm I was working within because of COVID impacts on the business, but I was able to secure a really enjoyable job in another small business.

I feel grateful to have taken the time to build my career with this short course. It was really helpful for the transition back to work, and also just really helpful information in general.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?

I would say go for it! There’s good support from the staff if you need it. It will help to build your self-esteem, and hopefully also help to build your skill set. Without hesitation I would recommend doing study with Perth College UHI.

We have courses starting in January 2021, where potential students can start from entry-level programmes – where no previous qualifications are required – and work their way up. See the courses on offer, and find your future here.
