Nine reasons to go to college

Nine reasons to go to college

1. At Perth College UHI, you can choose from lots of different course types

We have a huge variety of courses ranging from: Admin, Sport, Music, Engineering, Childcare and lots more.

2. Helps you focus on your future

It’s confusing at any age to know what type of job to apply for, or what type of career to work towards. Which is why starting a College course can help you determine a focus, based on what you enjoy and what your strengths/interests are.

3. There is a starting point for everybody - even if you didn’t get many qualifications at school

One of the fab things about studying at Perth College UHI is that many of our previous students started off doing a short course with us and then before they knew it, they had worked their way up to degree level.

We offer study courses from entry level (where no previous qualifications are required) through to degree-level study. A passion for a subject can be just as important as your qualifications. For example, an enthusiasm for baking and food could be your starting point to a place on a hospitality course!

4. Support

Coming to College usually has a considerable effect on people's lives: from the decision making and application stage, all the way to enrolment, induction and then ongoing throughout your studies.

We try to make coming to College as easy as possible but there may be times when you need somebody to talk to about any concerns you have during this journey. Student Services provide friendly and confidential services and support, where you are able to talk over your problems in private, and we refer you on to specialist agencies if required. The Student Support Team  are available to help you overcome any barriers that might get in the way of you completing your course, whether personal or academic problems.

We can offer help and support with:

  • Admissions

  • Funding

  • Careers and Employability

  • Counselling

  • Transition

  • Student Support

  • Additional Support

  • HISA (Highlands and Islands Students’ Association)

  • Nursery

  • The Learning Zone

Generally, the college experience is described as a ‘big group hug’ - giving you more independence than school - as well as the support you need to help move into further studies and employment. This all helps you gain confidence to take control of your own life.

5. Progression through different qualifications

Students can progress from entry level courses all the way up to degree level and professional qualifications. In most subject areas, you can move from one level to the next level and work your way up, all while gaining a qualification every year. You will often complete core skills as part of your coursework. Modules include Communications and Numeracy.

6. Practical learning

With respect to current Covid guidelines and as per Scottish Government advice, masks will be worn inside and one-meter distancing adhered to where possible. All areas will be well ventilated and measures in place to ensure the safest campus experience we can offer. We will continue to plan in line with Scottish Government guidance.

Under normal circumstances and depending on what course you are doing you may be:

  • Learning in a classroom with fellow students

  • Undertaking a block or one-day-a-week work-experience with an employer

  • Learning within realistic work environments such as: our hair and beauty salons and sports facilities at the Academy of Sport and Wellbeing (ASW), our Gallery Training Restaurant, Food Courts and engineering and construction workshops in the Brahan Building, and our state-of-the-art recording studios and media suites in the Goodlyburn building.

  • Attending workshops hosted by industry specialists, helping you make contacts for your career.

7. Different from school

You will be treated like – and expected to behave as an adult. Colleges are adult learning environments and help to prepare students for university or work. You will also be expected to do some independent study – especially key in this period of studying from home remaining the primary option where possible due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

In normal circumstances, a full-time college course may be only 3 days a week – this can come as a surprise if you have just come from school.

8. Opportunities to get involved in student life

HISA Perth is the Perth branch of the Highland and Islands Students Association. Once you are a student of Perth College UHI, you automatically become a member of the student’s association. Throughout the year, various events and activities are organised - the most memorable being Freshers’ Fayre which is held at the beginning of the academic year. We also have clubs and societies running throughout the year where you can meet people that share the same interests as you. These events provide students with the opportunity to connect with HISA and with student life at college.

9. Increase your earning power

Colleges play a central role in the development of Scotland's young workforce. Young people choosing to go to college do so in order to improve their employment opportunities and chances to progress to higher levels of study.

The more you learn is linked to the more you earn - so getting a qualification will increase your career prospects and therefore future earning power.
