Student Spotlight - Grant Irvine
We love hearing of our students’ career success, in the commercial world. This week, we are catching up with three of our Popular Music students - to hear about their time at Perth College UHI. First up, we have Grant.
What is your name, and where are you from?
Grant Irvine, and I’m from Dundee.
What were you doing before you came to Perth College UHI?
Since leaving school in 2013, I spent most of those years on tour with my band Model Aeroplanes. Writing and recording with them, took up pretty much all of my time.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I always wanted to try the university experience and my girlfriend at the time spotted the course and encouraged me to go for it.
Are the music facilities on-campus, good?
Yes, I thought the facilities were great in terms of performance/rehearsal room. I didn’t get a chance to work in the studios, as I’m not an audio student, however the studios do look incredible. I think the audio students are fortunate to have access to such amazing spaces.
During the pandemic, how did the style of teaching change? Were your lecturers supportive during this time?
The teaching changed a lot, as all of my classes moved online. Despite it being quite strange at first - we all had to adapt, and my lecturers couldn’t have been more helpful.
You are now in your final year; can you tell us a bit about the projects you have been working on?
For my honours project, I’ve decided to produce an album of original material. I’ve written, performed, produced and mixed all of the songs. It has been quite a lot of work, but very fulfilling. Through my solo project, Dev Green, I began releasing songs last year and all three of my singles have had lots of support in the form of BBC Radio Scotland plays and Spotify editorial playlisting.
Has there been any stand out/memorable moments from your course?
Performing with my ensemble during the BA3 concert was very enjoyable, as was watching all the other talented bands and artists. Other than that, the thing I enjoyed most was just generally being on campus, speaking to other students and staff. A very nice bunch.
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
An honours degree (hopefully 🙂).
Where can we find your music, and follow you?
My music is on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, iTunes and all the usual places and you can follow me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok!
What are your plans, for after you finish your course?
I’m going to keep producing and writing songs for other people, and I look forward to eventually being able to play gigs again.
Have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI?
Yes, I’ve had a wonderful time and met some great people.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?
Go for it, it’s more than just studying and gaining a qualification - it can really help you develop as a person, and as an artist. Getting the opportunity to meet like-minded people, is invaluable.
