Course Spotlight - Return to Learn

Course Spotlight - Return to Learn

‘Return 2 Learn’ is designed for adults who have been away from education for some time and need to develop the confidence to move forward. On the course, students work towards SQA qualifications while gaining valuable experience and are supported to progress on to further study or employment. We had a chat with six students, who are currently on the course 👇

Shirley

I’m originally from England but now live in Perth. Before coming to college, I was running my own cleaning business. I decided to pick the Return to Learn course as I needed a new career due to not being able to keep my business going due to scoliosis.

A standout moment of the course for me was going from level 5 to level 6 maths, and I am proud that I have been able to pass maths. I also managed to achieve English, and I am very proud of that because I am dyslexic.

I have enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI as I have become more confident within myself. I also liked how the campus was open plan.

After I finish my course, I am hoping to get an HNC and degree in Psychology. If you are thinking about studying at Perth College UHI, my advice would be to definitely join ‘Return to Learn’ as it opens so many doors to a new career in the future.

Alison

I’m from Perth and I am currently studying ‘Return to Learn’. Before this, I was doing a Connect course. I decided to pick this course to gain confidence and experience to prepare me for future courses. It is a very supportive course and is understanding to individual needs.

A standout moment from my course was achieving level 5 ICT, numeracy, and communications - with great support. I would highly recommend this course. After I finish this course, I plan to go on to do the Level 5 Social Science course.

My advice for anyone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI would be to do it! There is so much support and reassurance to help put your mind at ease and there are so many courses to do.

Gill

I’m originally from Liverpool and now live in Perth. I am currently studying Return to Learn.

Before coming to college, I was retired. I decided to pick this course as I wanted to return to education and was interested in this direction. I like that the campus is compact - so it is easy to find rooms.

My favourite thing about the course is being in class and interacting with others. A standout moment from the course has been learning to study, to save files, to store knowledge in my brain, and make new friends.

After I finish my course, I plan to continue studying and hopefully get a degree. My advice for anyone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI would be to go for it. You never know until you try.

John

I come from Falkirk originally, but now live in Scone, and I am currently studying ‘Return to Learn’.

I have been a full-time single father for the last ten years. Having been out of education for a long time, this course was a good idea as I like that it fits around my family commitments.

During the pandemic, we had a good mix of online and face to face teaching. A standout moment from the course was when we did a charity tombola to raise money for the walled garden.

Since doing the course, I have more commitment to learn, and I am looking forward to more learning. I like that everyone is really helpful on campus.

The return to learn course is a good stepping-stone for anyone who has been out of education for a long time. After I finish the course, I would like to go on and do health and social care, to eventually become a social worker.

Nova

I’m from Perth and I’m currently studying Return to Learn. Before coming to college, I was on a Connect course.

I decided to pick this course, as I wanted a course I could do to learn core skills and basics before going onto a different course.

My favourite thing about the course is being back in a learning environment. I have achieved the confidence to go onto another course and to think about my dream job.

I have enjoyed it studying at Perth College UHI, it has been a great experience. After I finish the course, I am going to do health and social care.

My advice for anyone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI would be: Just take the plunge, it will change your life.

Sarah

I’m from Perth and I am currently studying Return to Learn. Before coming to college, I was unemployed.

I decided to pick this course to help gain confidence and use as a gateway course. My favourite thing has been the different subjects, both in term 1 and 2. The lecturers are very helpful and supportive, and I have gained more confidence and experience. After I finish my course, I plan to go onto a childcare course.

I highly recommend Return to Learn as it has a different range of subjects, and the lecturers are great.

If you are ready to return to education, applications are open for this SEPTEMBER. Find a course to suit you and #FindYourFuture at Perth College UHI >> https://www.perth.uhi.ac.uk
