Student Spotlight - Molly Hyslop

“The main highlight for me would be year one when I stayed in halls and met lots of amazing people and friends for life.”

After graduating this year, Molly is now successfully working as a Home Economics teacher. She chatted to us about her experience at UHI Perth 👇

Can you introduce yourself?

Molly Hyslop and I am from Dumfries.

What course did you study at UHI Perth?

I studied BA (Hons) Food, Nutrition and Textiles Education.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

Through research of universities when I was looking to apply to courses.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

I was at school.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

It was the perfect course for me. It included everything I wanted to do to reach my end goal of becoming a Home Economics teacher.

What was your favourite thing about the course?
How close everyone was, we were like a mini family. I also loved going out on placement and experiencing what it’s like to be a teacher.

Were there any standout/memorable moments from your course?

Being able to produce a dress when doing textiles, as at the start of the sewing block I did not think that was achievable especially with my dodgy sewing skills.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you now that you have graduated from UHI Perth?

The experience of getting out on placements and being in the classroom has definitely helped me a lot as it has given me a bit of experience out in the classroom environment and what to expect now that I have my own classes.

Did you undertake a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

Yes, I went and completed multiple school placements during the course which were amazing!

Were your lecturers supportive during your studies?

Yes, they were very supportive.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

It’s a nice size, not too big, which I liked as I am not the best at navigating my way round places.

Did you enjoy studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

Yes, I loved it. The main highlight for me would be year one when I stayed in halls and met lots of amazing people and friends for life.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

I am a massive football fan supporting Queen of the South and Manchester United.

What are your future career plans now that you have graduated?

The plan after graduation was to start my probation year as a teacher which has now happened and I have just finished my first term as a teacher, which feels amazing.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

Just go and do it!
