Staff Spotlight - Kim Tree

If you’re interested in a career in Business or Accounting, our courses will equip you with the knowledge and professional skills needed to work in this thriving industry. In this week’s blog, we meet one of the lecturers from this department.

Tell us about yourself?

Kim Tree. I was born in Edinburgh, but my family are all from Yorkshire. I have moved all over the UK for work. I am a Chartered Management Accountant by profession, but I have been teaching for around 25 years in further Education. I moved to Auchterarder in 2018.

What is your role at UHI Perth? How long have you worked here?

I am a Lecturer in Business and Accounting here at Perth and have been here for just over five years, but I have taught for around 25 years in other colleges.

What’s the best part of your job?

Working with students who are concerned about working with numbers and showing them just how useful it is to have an understanding of financial aspects of a business can be.

What is a typical day at work like?

It usually involves lots of tea I like to be in college around 8am and check emails, make sure I am prepared for classes. I usually have at least two classes per day to teach and teaching accounting topics requires vast quantities of paper, so I use a trolley to get to and from classes!  I often use the time after classes to catch up with emails which have come in during the day or to get on with marking assessments.

What might people be surprised to know about you?

I love to watch cricket and am a qualified cricket scorer, having done my level 1 exam in the early 2000’s.

Favourite type of food?

I love a good curry. My husband has been visiting the same curry house in Glasgow since he was 4 - and we still visit now.

Favourite holiday destination, and why?

Canada – I love the fresh air and open spaces and have visited a few times. The skiing is great there – it’s well worth a trip.

Where would you like to travel next?

I would like to visit Washington DC, Chicago, and Philadelphia.

Favourite book?

The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams – very moving book and worth a read.

Favourite TV show or film?

I love Christmas Movies – the cornier the better but my favourite movies include The Proposal, The Holiday and Notting Hill.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be an air traffic controller in the RAF after I completed my degree and had all of the interviews to join up, but then met my husband and the rest is history. I went to Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, when it was still a college, and studied Business and whilst completing my work placement year I met my husband.

First thing you would do if you won £1 million?

Share some with my two sons! Buy an Aston Martin.

Happiest memory?

Spending my childhood summers on the East Yorkshire coast with my parents, brother, and cousins and other family. The best fish and chips ever can be found in Yorkshire.

And most embarrassing?

Too many to choose from!

And finally, if someone is interested in studying Accounting and/or Business at UHI Perth, what would your advice be to them?

Study something that you love – it doesn’t seem like work then.
