β€œThe lecturers could not have been more supportive, they truly believed in me and the reassurance and support they gave me has gone a long way.”

Caitlin came to UHI Perth when she was at school and progressed all the way up to an HNC. She chatted to us about her time and tells us about her plans for the future.

What is your name, and where are you from?

My name is Caitlin, I am 19 years old, and I grew up quite close to the lovely city of Perth.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

I found out about UHI Perth whilst attending school.

What course did you initially study at UHI Perth?

In 5th year, as one of my subjects, I choose to do a foundation apprenticeship in social services and healthcare.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I have always been interested in this and I felt this was a good opportunity to increase my knowledge within the sector. I love taking care of people and I truly believe kindness is the best gift you can give to someone. This was a two-year course. After I had passed the first year, I left school and went on to complete my second year of the foundation apprenticeship alongside studying the NC in Health and Social Care.

This meant I was in college quite frequently; however, I enjoyed being in such a welcoming and safe environment.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

The course, and the lecturers, really supported me to come out of my shell and engage in conversation and interaction with others as well as develop friendships.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

During my time on this course, I undertook a work placement, and I absolutely loved it! This was my favourite part of the course.  I loved being able to put what I learnt into practice and delivering a good quality of care to individuals. I also took on the role of being a student voice representative. This role was rewarding, and I felt so much joy being able to support my peers with their studies and be there for them if they had any questions or worries. After successfully completing these courses, it then allowed me to access the HNC Social Services course.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

Reflecting on my experience and time at UHI Perth, I thoroughly enjoyed studying here. My confidence has increased massively. The lecturers could not have been more supportive, they truly believed in me and the reassurance and support they gave me, has gone a long way.

I feel privileged to have had Kim as my PAT and to have had the lecturers I have had.

What are your future career plans?

I now have a permanent post with the team I did my HNC placement with. My plan is to go and study social work in the coming years, I look forward to applying everything I have learnt to support me with my further studies as well as practice.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

Go in with a positive attitude. Sometimes the practical side of a course can be overwhelming but take one day at a time. The lecturers are there to support you so if you do have a question ASK!! There is no such thing as a stupid question. Most of all, ENJOY EVERY MINUTE.

πŸ“ If you would like to chat to our Health and Social Care department about courses starting in 2024, come along to our Open Day on Saturday 28 October from 10am-2pm.
