Can you introduce yourself?

Liam Taylor and I’m from Perth and Kinross.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth, and what year are you currently in?

I’ve recently progressed from Professional Cookery Level 5 to Professional Cookery Level 6, but I also did the Come Dine with Me course back when I was in S6 at school.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

From secondary school. I had taken part in a class which took place in the college, which influenced my choice of university to study at.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

I was a student at Perth Academy, just finishing up my 6th year.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

Due to the interest in cooking I obtained from my workplace at the time and the pleasure I got from doing cookery in secondary school.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

The experience and guidance from my lecturers to help me produce dishes that are the best they can be. Also, the help I receive to become the best version of myself.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

The trips we go on to different masterclasses; service on a Friday afternoon; and, also, the banter with the lecturers is great too!

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

Yes, they have.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

I competed at ScotHot, took part in a culinary championship, and won a bronze medal in vegetable prep.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

The gym at the Academy of Sport and Wellbeing.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

The masterclasses, competing in competitions, and making new friendships that have the same interests as me.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

The gym, hanging out with friends, and music.

What are your future career plans?

To stay in restaurant work at the minute and potentially work on ferries or cruises to travel in the future.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

Go for it if you are feeling confident. And, if you are feeling not so confident, my confidence has progressed positively in the space of one year here and it’s not stopping - so go to make skills and memories for life.

Studying at UHI Perth gives you the perfect opportunity towards securing a successful future. In addition to full and part-time courses, there are also online, short, and professional development courses to help you gain additional skills or reskill towards a new career. Learn more in 2024 >>
