Student Spotlight - Neil Prentice

Did you know that UHI Perth is the longest established audio engineering department in Scotland and one of the first ever in the UK? Our reputation in industry is second to none, and all of our lecturers have had successful careers in the audio industry, so you can be sure that you are taught by experts in their field.

Now in the final year of his studies, we had a chat with a mature student who has had an interest in audio engineering since childhood.

What is your name, and where are you from?

Neil Prentice from Wormit in Fife.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth, and what year are you currently in?

I am in Year 4 of the Audio Engineering BSc Honours, after starting in 2020 as an HNC student.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

I was collecting someone from the campus in Perth, had five minutes spare, and read the prospectus.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

I was a retired NHS Doctor and full-time carer for my mother.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I have been interested in Audio Engineering and recorded sound since childhood and following a discussion with UHI Perth Lecturer Nick Green, I was certain that this was the right course for me.

What is your favourite thing about the course?
The openness of everyone, staff and colleagues, to share knowledge and ideas.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

Going into the studio without a mask!

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

I never knew about Archaeoacoustics previously but have studied this as part of my course and am sure I will continue with this once I leave.

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

I enquired about a work placement and was commissioned to do some freelance work which provided a valuable lesson in how the Audio Industry operates.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

I am very impressed by the knowledge, generosity, and teaching skills of the lecturers. They have all provided valuable support and advice at different times.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

The kindness, support, and friendship that I have found in all my colleagues.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

The coffee shop - where I don’t even need to ask for an Americano now, perhaps that’s not such a good sign!

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

Every day I learn something new.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

Hillwalking, reading, going to gigs, and attending football and rugby matches. I recently became a grandfather for the first time so that’s rather exciting.

What are your future career plans?

Freelance work as an Audio Engineer, Archaeoacoustic research, and continue doing occasional work for the NHS.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

Apply today, you won’t regret it.

Audio engineering has changed a lot recently, and our courses reflect this. We have recently introduced game audio to our portfolio as well as immersive audio in VR and in Dolby Atmos and 5.1, which complements our existing offerings in music production, live and broadcast events, and sound for TV and films.

Our facilities are exactly as you would find when working in industry. We want you to have a successful career in industry, and we ensure that our courses give you the best chance to do so. You can join us either as a novice or experienced user and leave with an Honours degree in audio engineering. Learn more in 2024 >>
