Alumni Spotlight - Dominic D’onofrio

The range of modules were extensive, and each one gave me fresh impetus to tackle challenges at work. Aside from the necessary qualification I needed, UHI helped develop my workplace confidence and an enthusiasm for life-long learning.”

Did you know that you can study a range of our courses online to fit around your existing job and life? Dominic shared his experience of doing just that 👇

Can you introduce yourself?

Dominic D’onofrio and I am based in Edinburgh.

What course did you study at UHI Perth?

BA Childhood Practice and I did this part-time online.

Did you consider other universities when you were deciding to study? If so, why did you choose us?

Yes, I did. Many of my peers used different universities but I was attracted to the fully online delivery model which offered me greater flexibility than other places. It also offered me a campus not too far from home should I require it.

Why was this right course for you?

It would offer me the required qualification to make progress in my career and equip me to be the best practitioner I could be. It was a logical next step and UHI offered a way for me to do this that worked on a personal level.

What do you think about the style of teaching and the support you’ve received from tutors and lecturers?

I thought it was a great balance. If I didn’t need anything, then I was free to make progress at my own pace. That always felt good as I was able to be autonomous and plan around my work/personal life while learning new things at my own pace. However, the few times I was unsure or needed a bit of support, then the tutors were just at the end of an email. I always found them responsive, clear, and helpful. The teaching itself was backed up with good resources and a clear pathway. Assignments were varied and interesting while also offering challenge.

Have you been/ were you involved in any sports, social or cultural clubs or activities whilst at UHI?

I wasn’t on the basis that I didn’t attend the campus, but I did find the informal WhatsApp groups a great support socially.

Upon starting your course, did you have a clear idea of the career path you wanted to follow after UHI?

Yes, my plan was to achieve my BA Childhood Practice to enable me to make the next step up in my career. For example, to venture into a leadership position while also strengthening my existing practice, building confidence, and expanding my knowledge.

Are you currently employed? If so, can you tell us who your current employer is, what you are currently doing and what does your work involve?

Yes, I am employed by a local authority to lead a large early years setting. My work involves supporting children, their families, and a staff team including external professionals to deliver high quality early education and care in line with local and national priorities.

How do you feel your studies have helped you with your career? Was there anything you did whilst at UHI that you think helped you secure your job?

I feel that my studies have supported me to develop my knowledge, practice and reflect on my leadership style. I also developed new skills such as being a reflexive professional and how to adopt the role of researcher. The range of modules were extensive, and each one gave me fresh impetus to tackle challenges at work. Aside from the necessary qualification I needed, UHI helped develop my workplace confidence and an enthusiasm for life-long learning.

What were the steps you took from graduation to your current role?

I used my degree to secure a new post which offers me long term security and a fresh challenge.

Where would you like to go with your career in the future?

I’d like to continue to learn and develop. We should never stop! I would like to continue to grow within my role and help others to make progress in their development.

What advice would you give to those considering studying in terms of careers and employment?

It might seem daunting, and it absolutely is a rollercoaster of a challenge. Working full time, looking after my own two children and studying was a real balancing act. However, making that first step and enrolling in the degree was a great decision and the sense of achievement with each passing assignment, new piece of learning or feedback from tutors is so worth it.  Studying gives you a life changing opportunity in terms of finding out more about yourself, society, and opens up conversations and opportunities in the workplace.

What are your favourite things about UHI?

I like that the university is new, innovative and offers a flexible approach to education while also working. I also enjoyed connecting with students from across Scotland.

Is there anything else you feel like telling us about your experience at UHI?

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at UHI. I couldn’t have asked for more in terms of flexible delivery of a degree. I felt challenged, supported and it has resulted in personal and professional growth. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to make that next step in life.
