Our students constructed a giant bridge puzzle! 🧩

The NC Construction Technician students took on the challenge of identifying, assembling, and labelling the components of a full-scale 20-metre bridge.

Using technical drawings, they carefully determined the location of each piece, placing them precisely as they would be fitted in the final structure.

The activity was expected to last for two days; however, our students were able to do it in half the time.

Daniel Kiraly, Construction Lecturer explained: "I was thoroughly impressed by our students' ability to interpret construction drawings and assemble the bridge independently. Most importantly, they enjoyed the experience. The students are now eagerly awaiting planning permission so they can return and reassemble the bridge at its final location."

Traditionally, the NC Construction Technician students will progress on to our HNC Construction Management programme, where they will have the opportunity of solidifying their knowledge and get industry-specific, site and project management experience through work placements with various employers.

A powerful series of self-portraits by Simon Reekie, artist, art therapist, and lecturer at UHI Perth, was selected for feature by the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) as part of their online gallery initiative, Art Therapists Art.

520 trees were planted to boost campus biodiversity 🌳🌲

A successful application to The Woodland Trust, resulted in the donation of 420 native trees to enhance biodiversity across the campus, alongside 100 self-grown trees.

The initiative, supported by June Wilson, UHI Perth Sustainability Coordinator and led by Colin McSherry, UHI Perth Horticulture Lecturer; aims to reinstate the woodland walk behind the Horticulture Unit and introduce tree planting in various areas of the campus. The project will contribute to year-round colour, improved habitats for wildlife, and a more sustainable and enjoyable environment for students, staff, and visitors.

The donated trees include a rich mix of native species such as Rowan, Hazel, English Oak, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Silver Birch, and Dogwood. The self-grown specimens include Oak, Birch and Horse Chestnut. These varieties were selected for their ecological value and seasonal interest, supporting pollinators, birds, and small mammals throughout the year.

The planting project is part of a wider commitment by UHI Perth to promote the campus environment and create green spaces that benefit both people and nature. The NC Level 4 Horticulture students will be actively involved in the planting and ongoing care of the trees, gaining valuable hands-on experience in sustainable land management.

Colin explained: “We’re thrilled to have received this generous donation from The Woodland Trust. Reinstating the woodland walk and planting across campus will not only improve biodiversity but also create a more vibrant and welcoming environment for everyone at UHI Perth."

We welcomed over twenty businesses and nine support organisations on campus a ‘Winter Workforce Connections Event’

Hosted in partnership with the UHI Perth Business Engagement Team, Tay Cities SME Skills Fund and Skills and Employment Support, the event provided a great opportunity for local businesses to discover what free support is available to them.

Aimee Leith, UHI Perth Business Engagement Team Coordinator, commented:

"Today’s event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with local businesses and highlight the wide range of support available to help them grow. We were delighted with the turnout and the level of engagement throughout the session. Events like this really demonstrate just how much support is available to help organisations develop their workforce, upskill staff, and plan for future growth."

We hosted the Scottish Student Sport Festive Gathering ⛹️‍♂️

The one-day winter extravaganza touched on best practice, learning and connections across the SSS Network, sprinkled with a hint of festive cheer. Figures across tertiary education, sport, and further afield also presented sessions on topics such as ‘Sport for life in tertiary education’ and ‘Reflections on 20 years in student sport.’

We celebrated success at the CDN College Awards!

The event, hosted by the College Development Network (CDN), showcased innovation, inclusion, and student success.
