Student Spotlight - Joy Axley
If you’re interested in working with people in a fashion-led innovative industry, then the hairdressing courses at UHI Perth will help you unleash your creative potential and develop the skills needed for a rewarding career. Our fully equipped working salon will enhance your career and employability prospects by providing you with a realistic working salon experience throughout your study.
In 2024, there were 8,700 hairdressers and barbers working in the Scottish hairdressing industry.* In this week’s blog, we meet a student who is working towards joining the sector ✂️
What is your name and what course are you studying?
Joy Axley and I’m doing Level 6 Hairdressing.
What were you doing before the course and why did you choose it?
I did my SVQ Level 1 Hairdressing at another college, but I didn't enjoy it, so I left and worked at a cafe for about six months. I then got a job at the Charlie Taylor Hair and Beauty salon in Perth, and I got on my course from there.
How did you feel when you started at UHI Perth?
I was a bit nervous because of my last experience at another college. I thought it was going to be the same again, but it's completely different. If you have a problem, they're so understanding and supportive.
How have your lecturers supported you?
I really struggle with my mental health. I have ADHD and Autism, but the lecturer has been really, really supportive. There's lots of people that you can go to if you're struggling and you need any help. Even just with understanding something a bit more in-depth, there's places for you to go and chat to somebody.
How has your course prepared you for industry?
When we have actual client sessions it helps you build your confidence. You’re working with a real client rather than just someone you already know. They don't just ask for simple things like a one length cut, they’ll ask for things that are actually a bit more complicated and a bit more unique which is good for us to practice and get used to.
What advice would you give to new students?
It feels a lot scarier than what it is. Everyone here is nice if you are struggling. There's so much support in place in every building and there's people that you can go to for help.
At UHI Perth we work hard to support all of our students. We recognise that each student is different and do our best to provide appropriate and effective support to reflect this.
We try to make coming to College as easy as possible but there may be times when you need somebody to talk to about any concerns you have during this journey. Student Services provide friendly and confidential services and support, where you are able to talk over your problems in private, and we refer you on to specialist agencies if required.
If you’d like to find out more about our hairdressing courses, come along to our Open Day on Wednesday 21 January from 2-5pm.
