Student Spotlight - Hannah McGarrie
“Scotland's workforce is internationally recognised as one of the best trained and most reliable and cost-competitive labour forces in the world.”
Our degree in Business and Management is a high-quality, broad-based qualification which provides the fundamental knowledge and skills required for the contemporary business environment.
In an uncertain global economy, this programme will enable students to consider how the business world operates holistically and be confident in evaluating complex problem-solving scenarios.
Students will understand the considerations and impacts of decision making and be able to effectively communicate those decisions to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
In this week’s blog, we meet a student who is currently undertaking this qualification.
Can you introduce yourself?
Hannah McGarrie from Elgin.
What course are you studying at UHI Perth?
I am currently studying BA Business and Management at UHI Perth.
I previously studied NPA Photography at UHI Moray, and my HNC Administration and IT at UHI Moray. I then did my HND in Administration and IT at UHI Perth.
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
Recommended by UHI Moray after the course wasn’t being run there.
What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?
Still at student at UHI Moray but, before then, I was working as a support worker.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I wanted a change in career, and I have always really enjoyed Administration tasks. I did day release from school when I was younger and chose Admin back then too. The opportunity to get my degree hadn’t been an option till now.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
I chose the marketing pathway; however, I’ve been really interested in the HR and Employment Law modules included in this.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
I have always said “If I pass this year, I will do next year!” so after each year, the emails being told I have passed all modules have been very happy for me.
I have received fantastic support from the learning support team, who have provided me with numerous resources and guided me in the right direction.
Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?
During my HND, we had to choose a work placement, however I was already the Treasurer for my local Pottery Group (Moray Community Pottery), so I used that, and the group were very accommodating, giving me extra responsibility to tailor my needs for the course.
Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?
Yes, very supportive. There have been times when I very much needed their understanding which I got.
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
I have learnt so much in my time at UHI Perth and, not just academically, but about myself. Personal growth has been my biggest achievement.
What do you like about the campus/facilities?
I have only been on campus twice and the facilities they offer are fantastic. Particularly the catering and the climbing wall is unique.
Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth?
Yes, I am enjoying my studies at Perth
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?
I am keen photographer and have my own smallholding - looking after sheep, goats, and horses.
What are your future career plans?
Following on from what I have always said, I will continue to do my Honours degree after this year and potentially my masters. After that, I plan to get a job using the skills I have learnt in my time here.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?
Always contact your PAT or lecturers, they are there to help and will always do the best they can to help. They want you to succeed. And, if you can, be as organised as possible.
