Work-based Assessor Spotlight - Callum Hetherington

Work-based Assessor Spotlight - Callum Hetherington

Work based training allows you to work towards a vocational qualification relevant to your employment, so you can learn while you earn and gain a recognised qualification.

Whether you are a young person looking for an apprenticeship, or an employer who is keen to train and develop staff, our business team can guide you.

Our apprentices are supported throughout their journey by our work-based assessors and in this week’s blog, we meet one of our newest staff members - Callum.

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Callum Hetherington, and I grew up in Livingston but have lived in Dundee for just over four years.

What were you doing before you came to work at UHI Perth?

I trained as an HGV Technician with Volvo Truck and Bus and, before joining UHI Perth, I worked for the RAC as a Roadside Patrol.

What is your current job role at UHI Perth?

I am a work-based assessor for light vehicle apprentices and moved into the role in January 2025.

What’s the best part of the job?

Seeing the apprentice’s skills growing first hand - knowing they have the capability and confidence to build on the skills they are learning in the workplace and college.

Why do you think apprenticeships are important to businesses?

For me, apprentices are important because they ensure the future of skilled trades which will keep the automotive industry alive and bring fresh energy to the workforce.

Within your trade, how can training and apprenticeship improve your skills and help move you up the career ladder?

There are a lot of opportunities to move up the career ladder, - depending on what path they want to take - from becoming a master technician, to a workshop controller, sales, or they can go down the route I did and begin working in education.

How do you promote apprenticeships to employers?

I like to focus on the benefits to the business and apprentices. Training the apprentice to be a skilled employee which will bring in a revenue stream to the company. An apprentice will bring a fresh look and perspective to the company potentially generating new ideas to develop and invest in the future of the business.

What might people be surprised to know about you?

I am a frequent visitor to Disney World. I blame my wife as I had never been until we met. Now for the last four years, we have been to Disney several times and looking forward to going again in August 2025.

Who, or what, inspires you?

I find myself inspired by seeing first-hand how others can overcome challenges and the confidence this gives them to strive towards their goals.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

“If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing well”.

Favourite hobby?

Playing my accordion. I learned to play in the accordion fifteen years ago. Unfortunately, I don’t have as much time as I used to, but I still enjoy playing when I get the chance.

What would you do if you won £1 million pounds?

I would buy a garage to restore and maintain classic cars. 60’s mustang would be first on my list!
