Student Spotlight - Chris Fairley

Student Spotlight - Chris Fairley

Last year the construction sector employed around 201,800 people in Scotland and is predicted to need at least 22,000 more people by 2027.* At UHI Perth, we are fully focused on training the next generation of built environment professionals, enhancing our students’ skills and abilities, preparing learners for employment within the construction industry sector. In this week’s blog, we meet a student who came to college as a more mature learner to do a joinery apprenticeship 🪚

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Chris Fairley. I live near Pitlochry, but I am originally from Edinburgh.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

I am on the Adult Apprenticeship course for Carpentry and Joinery. Currently in the second and final year.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

Whilst doing research into modern apprenticeships.

What were you doing before you came to college?

I was working as a fencer in Highland Perthshire.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I had always wanted to be a joiner and when the offer came up with my current employer, I felt it was a great opportunity, giving me the chance to become a fully qualified joiner.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

I enjoy learning the theory behind construction and building science as it explains the reasons behind the work I’m doing on site.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

Being nominated and awarded the ‘Joinery Apprentice of the Year’ for UHI Perth was a big surprise and a proud moment for me. However, unfortunately, I was unable to attend the ceremony as my daughter was born a couple days beforehand.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

All of the course is relevant in my day-to-day life on site. The knowledge and experience I've gained during my time at college allows me to approach tasks with more confidence as I have been shown and instructed by the professional college tutors.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

Being nominated for the World Skills competition in Dundee.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

The campus is a very welcoming and friendly place. The equipment in the joinery workshop is great to use, especially for sharpening your chisels at lunch!

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

Yes, I have had a great time studying at UHI Perth. I’ve been in a class of great guys who have all made me feel very welcome and often helped each other during the course which created a good bond in the class.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?

My daughter was born in early summer, and she is keeping my wife and I very busy.

What are your future career plans?

I intend to stay with my current employer for the foreseeable future and later become a self-employed joiner once I have gained more experience.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

As an adult apprentice I was apprehensive about joining a course of younger students, but the experience I've had at UHI Perth couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming with regards to the staff and students and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend studying here to anyone.
