It has given me the confidence to speak to customers and colleagues in English, which is very important for any job.”

UHI Perth is the largest English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provider in Perth and Kinross and we work alongside other providers in the region to create learning pathways for ESOL learners to enhance their prospects for work and further study. Current student, Anna, shared her experience so far of the course ⬇️

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Anna Pyzalka, and I am studying English (ESOL) at UHI Perth.

What were you doing before the course and why did you choose it?

Before this course, I was working in a nursery in Poland. I chose this course because I wanted to improve my communication skills, and live and work in Scotland.

How did you feel when you started at UHI Perth?

I was a bit shy because of my English, but the atmosphere was very welcoming, so I felt comfortable quickly.

What subjects have you studied/enjoyed during your course?

I have studied grammar and vocabulary, but I really enjoy the speaking and listening activities because they are very useful.

How have you got on with your classmates?

Very well! We come from different countries, so we always speak English to each other. It’s a great way to make friends.

Have you faced any challenges during your course?

Yes, understanding different accents in Scotland was hard at first, and writing long essays is still a challenge for me.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

I like the library and the quiet study spaces.

How have your lecturers supported you?

They are very patient. If you don’t understand something, they explain it in a simpler way until I fully understand it.

Have you been on any placements?

Not yet, we don’t have placements on the ESOL course, but we do get to go on trips and visit other departments where we can practice our English.

Do you have any hobbies outside of your course?

Yes, I like cooking and going for walks. I also have a part-time job in a restaurant.

What are you covering in your course now?

At the moment, we are practising for our assessments and learning how to write formal letters.

How has the course prepared you for industry?

It has given me the confidence to speak to customers and colleagues in English, which is very important for any job.

What are your future plans after your course?

I want to progress to a higher level of English or start a professional course possibly in Business or Social Care.

What advice would you give to new students?

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Just keep talking and use every chance to practice your English.

This ESOL course is for people whose first language is not English, and who already have an intermediate level of English. It will prepare you to study other courses at UHI Perth, help you progress into employment, and assist in integrating into Scottish life. Apply now for a September 2026 start >>
