Student Spotlight - Jacqueline Kerry Wright

Student Spotlight - Jacqueline Kerry Wright

The Scottish automotive repair industry is growing, with maintenance and repair jobs rising by 19% (roughly 40,000 jobs) over the past decade*.

The Body Repair facilities at UHI Perth provide students with an excellent environment working on real life vehicles to mirror current industry practice. The area has seen significant investment and updating of equipment which means students can practice the skills at the same level of facilities they would find in commercial companies. We caught up with one of our previous Level 6 students, to hear how they found the course ⬇️

Can you introduce yourself?

Jacqueline Kerry Wright and I am from Perth.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

At the start of the summer, I finished Level 6 Body Repair. I previously completed Access Level 3 and Level 5 Body Repair and, last year, I completed Level 6 Paint Repair. I am now starting my Body Repair apprenticeship.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

At High School and, from my parents, who found the course on the college website.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

I came straight from school.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I researched the course and I found that the Access course was more hands-on work. I preferred the practical side before I had to study for the exams.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

Making things out of metal. Paint repair also excited me as I loved art at school, and I draw in my spare time.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

The student led project work!

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

I have grown in confidence during my time at UHI Perth - my hand skills are way better than I could have imagined. Best of all has been the student led projects, I fabricated a dummy fuel tank and was given free hand on the colour, it has pride of place in my room at home.

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

Yes, I did work experience at DAF, and I now have an apprenticeship there too.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

The lecturing team have been brilliant. They have really supported me throughout my time at UHI Perth, I can’t thank them enough!

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

Passing the majority of my exams first time!

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

The library is a nice chill place to study, plus the workshops are pretty cool.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

I have enjoyed everything really, I can’t narrow it down to one thing.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

Drawing.

What are your future career plans?

To build on my experience during my studies as I start my apprenticeship.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

The library is a nice place to study and, overall, I have really enjoyed my time at UHI Perth!
