Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Heather Dey and I’m originally from Aberfeldy.
What course are you studying at UHI Perth?
I'm studying BA (Hons) Visual Communication and Design, and I am about to start my fourth year.
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
I have friends and family who studied at UHI Perth and when I moved back to Perth, I decided to apply.
What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?
I worked for a sales company before coming to UHI Perth.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I’ve always been very creative and, after I had my daughter, I didn't want to go back into sales. I decided to focus on something I was passionate about, and this course was a good way for me to develop my art and design skills for a future career in this industry.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
My favourite part has been the wide range of skills I’ve developed. I’ve particularly enjoyed learning screen-printing and exploring that process in depth. I’ve also gained valuable experience in photography and have really enjoyed building my skills in that area.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
One of my favourite moments was a class trip we took to Stirling photography festival, we saw a selection of work from Simon Murphy’s “Govan Hill” collection and listened to his presentation about photography. I found it inspiring and it really made me want to try street photography.
What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?
The course has helped me develop a range of skills. I’ve gained a lot of confidence in my work and being able to share it with others. I’ve learned a few printing techniques that will be helpful for me being able to produce work to sell. I think the range of techniques and styles I have been taught has been helpful to me as a multidisciplinary designer. I’m constantly learning and developing my style on this course and will continue to do so after graduating.
Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?
I have worked part-time as an intern in the college Marketing department; it has been a really great experience. I’ve enjoyed being back in a work environment and everyone has been friendly and supportive. I’ve had the chance to photograph events happening on campus which has been enjoyable. I've met a lot of staff and students whilst being an intern, it's given me a lot of confidence, and it's been good to find out about the range of events that happen on campus.
Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?
The lecturers have been extremely supportive during my studies. They are always there to listen and give advice.
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
Having my third-year designs showcased at St Paul’s Plaza this year as part of the grad show was good. I had three pieces of work displayed and that was a really proud moment for me.
What do you like about the campus/facilities?
I don't get much time to use the facilities on campus, but I have been to the climbing centre a few times and really enjoy that space.
Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?
I have enjoyed my time studying at UHI Perth, I’ve had a lot of support from the lecturers which has helped me juggle my childcare commitments and college work.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?
Most of my hobbies are creative ones, learning new skills on the course has really helped me develop them more.
What are your future career plans?
I would like to be a graphic designer after graduating from UHI Perth. I'm not sure yet the path I will take into the creative industries, but I feel like this course has given me a lot of options for career development.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?
I would highly recommend studying at UHI Perth, there is a lot of student support services, and the campus has a lot to offer. My advice would be to study something you have a passion or high interest for, that will really help keep you motivated with your studies.
