To see what a typical day at college is like for a beauty therapy student, we asked Evie to give us the lowdown 👇

What is a typical day like at college and how is your day structured?

The day starts off by going into the salon in the morning and setting up for whatever treatment we are carrying out first. Usually, we cover 2-4 subject areas per day – with different classes being split up by coffee breaks and a lunch break. Some days we need to be in different buildings for our subjects, such as business and promotional and selling skills, and we go up the hill to the Brahan building for these. Normally we have an idea of everything we will be doing that day before we go into college, but sometimes there are changes that we need to adapt to. Every day is different which makes it interesting for us and keeps us on our toes!

What is the best part of your day?

I would say the best part of my day at college is going in first thing in the morning and setting up for whatever treatment you are starting with. This involves going to the laundry and collecting any towels, bedding, blankets, pillows, and mitts you may need to carry out the treatment. It also involves going to the stock room and collecting any products such as massage oil and different skin care items. The stock room also has lots of different equipment for all kinds of treatments such as wax pots, electrical machines, UV nail lamps and foot spas. I like this part of the day as it helps you to wake up first thing in the morning and focus. It helps you to get your brain into gear for the day ahead!

What is your favourite thing about the course?

I think my favourite thing about the course has been meeting so many lovely people with similar interests. Being around others who have the same mindset and want to thrive in the beauty therapy industry is amazing as you can help each other to build up your skills and knowledge. It’s also really helpful as you’re able to give each other constructive criticism on where and how to improve your treatment techniques. I also really like how modern the course is and how different aspects have been upgraded to fit in with the beauty therapy industry today. The products and equipment used on the course are all very high quality too which makes the different treatments easier to carry out effectively for your clients. The salons at the college make you feel like you’re in a real salon in the beauty industry which allows you to have a more professional approach when doing treatments for your clients.

What is your favourite treatment you have learned?

I think my favourite treatment that I have learned is waxing. I like it because it is a satisfying treatment that you can get instant results from. I also enjoy massage as it is nice to take a holistic approach and treat the entire body as one. It’s also a very relaxing treatment to conduct as a therapist and makes you feel very zen!

What are your hobbies/interests outside of college?

Outside of college I currently have two jobs, so I guess going to work is my main hobby! They keep me busy pretty much every day I’m not at college. When I have free time, I like to spend it with my friends and family. I try to practice beauty treatments regularly at home as well. I have recently become interested in healing crystals and have been collecting different ones to add to my collection. When I have more time to devote to it, I would love to expand my knowledge on the subject of energy healing and possibly take part in a reiki course!

And finally, have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI?

I have really enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI! Obviously, it’s been a very different experience than it originally would’ve been due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but on the whole, it has been great! When I first started the HNC Beauty Therapy course, I wasn’t sure if it would be right for me, but after doing so much better than I had ever anticipated I would, I realised that I was definitely going into the right industry! The HND course has shown me as well that I have definitely made the best decision and has also shown me that when I put my mind to something I can achieve great things. To anyone considering studying beauty therapy, I would say go for it! It is such a rewarding industry and makes you feel amazing by helping others to feel good about themselves.
