Student Spotlight - Cameron Mathers

There is a strong demand for business and administrative professionals in Perth and Kinross – with support, clerical and administrative positions being in the ‘Top 20’ employing occupations. Perth College UHI is supporting this growth by helping students gain the right qualifications, skills, and expertise to succeed in this field. In this week’s blog, we meet a student who is studying on his first course after leaving high school.

What is your name, and where are you from?

Cameron Mathers and I am from Bridge of Earn.

What course are you studying at Perth College UHI, and what year are you currently in?

NQ Business and Administration and I am in my first year.

We work with a number of local employers, such as: Perth & Kinross Council, Perth Royal Infirmary, Stagecoach, Balhousie Care Group, Aviva, St Johnstone FC, Lantra and Persimmon Homes, to ensure students get the best possible experience.”

How did you hear about Perth College UHI?

Through my family because my brother went to Perth College UHI after school, and I also learned more about it near the end of school.

What were you doing before you came to college?

Finishing my 5th year of high school.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

Because I have an interest in business and I would like to have my own business in the future.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

Meeting new people.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

Passing my database class because I struggled in it at the start, but I ended up completing it.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave Perth College UHI?

I have better confidence, which means my people skills have gotten better. I also completed level 5 maths, which I was not able to do at school.

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at Perth College UHI?

Yes, with the Perth College UHI marketing team.

Completing the first term.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

That everything is easy to find and well-laid out.

Have you enjoyed studying at Perth College UHI?

Yes, I have.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?

Gaming, cars, and spending time with friends.

What are your future career plans?

I’m not sure yet, but would I like to work in an office kind of environment.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Perth College UHI?

Just go for it and if you decide it is not for you, you can leave - but you won’t know what it’s like unless you try it.
