l always felt a valued student and was encouraged and supported to do my best.”

Lorraine came to UHI Perth to upskill and improve her job prospects. As her course is now complete, we caught up with her to see how she get on 👇

Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Lorraine McMillan.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

BA Events Management and I have just finished my course.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

From local knowledge.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

I was a school cook for 18 years.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I specifically wanted to learn patisserie skills.

What was your favourite thing about the course?

Bringing my skills and knowledge up-to-date for better employment opportunities.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

I have had many interesting events over my four years study: COVID-19 taught me so much about learning via the computer, winning the Hospitality Quaich last year was a highlight, and the trip to London in May was outstanding.

Have you put on any events as part of your course?

I organised several events over the last year: a Children in Need fundraiser; for the Police Treatment Centres Children Charity; a Christmas showbox appeal with Strathearn Cares for older residents; a psychic event with a floor show and private readings; a textile exhibition for the FNTE students, and I was nominated for a HISA award.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

I have gained confidence in myself and can now speak in public. Having a disability, being mature, and being Care Experienced were obstacles in my mind, but they never held me back.

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

I completed work experience at The Gleneagles Hotel, surveying how the housekeeping managers operated a large-scale project.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

The hospitality lecturers have been hugely supportive of my time at college and often go above and beyond their job roles. l always felt a valued student and was encouraged and supported to do my best.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my studies and look forward to graduating in October. l think public speaking was a big accomplishment for me as this terrified me in the past.

What did you like about the campus/facilities?

The campus is fit for purpose and the equipment in the hospitality department is amazing. Everyone is friendly and supportive.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

I have thoroughly enjoyed this rollercoaster and the London trip was outstanding.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

I love to travel, and I am look forward to my first cruise around the Mediterranean in October. New York is my favourite place.

What are your future career plans?

I will continue to seek new opportunities. Lecturing is something l would like to do in the future to give back to the next generation.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

I would tell anyone that age and disability are no barrier. Just go and try and you will surprise yourself.
