If you’re looking to progress into a career in accounting and finance, the courses on offer at UHI Perth will give you a practical foundation and the professional skills and experience needed to work in this thriving industry.

After realising that the sector she was working in was no longer suitable for her lifestyle, Katarzyna returned to education to start her journey to a more family-friendly career. She shared her experience with us ⬇️

Can you introduce yourself?

Katarzyna Rogowska, originally from Poland. My family moved to Scotland when I was 12 years old and I’ve lived in Perthshire for 18 years.

What course did you study at UHI Perth?

HND Accounting. I completed an NQ course in Business and Accounting prior to starting my HND at UHI Perth.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

I’ve always known about it as it was the most local college to where I grew up.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

After leaving high school, I achieved an SVQ in Health and Social Care and then worked in the private care sector for most of my adult life. During this time, I also became a mum to three little girls.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

When my youngest daughter was a few months old, and I was on maternity leave, I decided I would like a job where I could spend weekends and Christmas with my children. I didn’t think working shifts was working for me anymore, and after a recent split from my then partner, I thought it would be a perfect time to start learning to drive and applying for college so that I could become more independent. Accounting and maths were something I was always interested in, but never thought I would be able to study as a single mum.

What was your favourite thing about the course?

I enjoyed a lot of my classes. I loved applying my knowledge at work, especially in my second year of my HND. The lecturers were always very good at applying their knowledge to real-life scenarios, which made things easier to learn. Having such great lecturers, and building an informal relationship with them, made it easier when I had any queries.

Were there any standout/memorable moments from your course?

I received an award at the beginning of my studies for my ‘exemplary attitude towards studies’. This made me feel very appreciated and seen. It was nice to have my enthusiasm towards studying, after such a long break, recognised.

What knowledge, skills and experience did you gain from your course that have helped you since leaving UHI Perth?

As I have mentioned earlier, I am now able to apply a lot of the knowledge at my workplace. The income tax and corporation tax units especially. They taught me a huge amount about VAT treatment and capital allowances which I apply a lot when working. My lecturer Christine Woods was great at delivering the unit. She has always laid out the 3-hour lessons in a great way, and I felt that she always tried her hardest when delivering the unit.

Did you undertake a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

I did, at the beginning of my studies in the NQ. I was able to do my work experience in Aviva, which was amazing.

What did you think about the styles of teaching, and the support you received from staff?

I was able to develop a very professional, although informal approach, with most of my lecturers. This meant I wasn’t afraid to ask for any help or assistance during or in between any classes. Most of the lecturers were happy to answer any of my queries in a quick turnaround.

What did you like about the campus/facilities?

I love how affordable the canteen was. When on campus I would always use the canteen at lunch and the food was always great!

Were there any other achievements you gained, on your journey?

Apart from my award in NQ, no, but I am extremely proud of myself walking away with an HND.

Upon starting your course, did you have a clear idea of the career path you wanted to follow after UHI Perth?

I knew I wanted to work in accounting, but I was unsure if I would sit my professional exams eventually or the size of company I wanted to work for.

Are you currently employed?

I work for an accounting company called COUNT. At work, I help out different clients with their bookkeeping and accounting needs. From processing invoices, to sending out paylist, to helping the more senior accountants prepare for Vat returns or self-assessments for our clients.

Do you feel your studies have helped you with your career? Was there anything you did whilst at UHI Perth that you think helped you secure your job?

I believe going back to college helped me gain knowledge and confidence. Receiving positive feedback, and passing assessments, helped me go after what I wanted. It made me more confident to apply for work in the accounting field.

What were the steps you took from graduation to your current role?

I secured this job while still studying at UHI Perth.

Where would you like to go with your career in the future?

I would love to start my professional exams in the next few years, hoping to eventually be registered with ACCA.

Did you enjoy studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

I did for the most part. I enjoyed meeting new people throughout my time at Perth and making new friends.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

To enjoy the time and take advantage of the knowledgeable lecturers whilst there.
