“The level of support and guidance at UHI was incredible.”
Studying Music Business at UHI Perth allows you to gain valuable experience, connections, and knowledge in this diverse industry. After a break from education, Dayna decided to return to finish her degree and pursue a career in music publishing. She shared her experience 👇
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Dayna Reid, and I’m a music publisher from Glasgow.
What course did you study at UHI Perth?
I studied BA (Hons) Music Business, completing my degree with distinction in 2025.
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
I first discovered UHI Perth back in 2016, when I completed my HND in Music Business. My lecturers at the time highly recommended continuing my studies there. Although I had to pause my education due to personal circumstances, I was determined to return and finally did this year.
What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?
Before returning to study, I worked full-time as a carer for adults with learning disabilities, completing relevant qualifications in the care industry to progress within the field. Outside of work, I loved attending gigs and gaming. Admittedly, I’ve probably invested way too much time into gaming!
Why did you decide to pick this course?
I was growing tired of doing the same routine daily, I had worked my job for five years at this point and wanted to try something new and that I had genuine passion/interest in. As I had studied Music Business previously, and loved the course, I decided it was time to continue my studies and aim for a career that I really wanted.
What was your favourite thing about the course?
I loved the challenge of ‘Creative Project 2’, where I got to take an idea and bring it to life. I launched my own record label as part of this module and navigated real-world challenges like artist management and recording sessions. Having constant support and feedback from my lecturers made the whole process much more rewarding.
Were there any standout/memorable moments from your course?
Absolutely! One that stands out was when the lead singer of Swim School and their manager visited campus to talk about music management and tourism. It was eye-opening to learn about different areas of the industry that often don’t get much attention.
Did you have any guest speakers throughout your course?
Yes, we had guest speakers from the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) who shared insights on current topics and developments within the industry. Afterwards, we were encouraged to meet the panellists and ask questions, which was a great networking opportunity.
What knowledge, skills and experience did you gain from your course that have helped you since leaving UHI Perth?
One highlight was interviewing a record label manager about the relevance of traditional A&R in today’s digital age, which gave me a fascinating perspective on how the role has evolved. We also attended Resonate, a major music conference in Glasgow - where I listened to the inspiring experience of world-leading music supervisors, discovered new artists from across Scotland, and networked with industry professionals.
Did you undertake a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?
I did a six-month placement with 23rd Precinct as a music publisher, which is the career that I wanted to pursue and my reason for returning for studying. During this placement, I was able to gain access to platforms like DISCO and PRS that otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to access - ultimately expanding my skill set and experience.
What did you think about the styles of teaching, and the support you received from staff?
Most of my course was online - we were rarely in class, which was very helpful for myself as I was travelling from Glasgow, so it didn’t limit my employment around attending UHI. We did however have access to the campus if we decided that we’d rather be in class, or use the facilities on campus. The support I received was above and beyond expectations, I always felt completely confident and comfortable as I was able to have 1-to-1 sessions with my lecturers who would check in on myself and my progress in my studies.
What did you like about the campus/facilities?
The campus itself for me was the selling point when picking where I would continue my studies! The recording studios, stage/theatre and classroom sizes were impressive. I used the recording studios a lot in my course to go alongside my record label for the creative project and was able to communicate and collaborate with other students across different courses while doing this.
Were there any other achievements you gained, on your journey?
Honestly, confidence! Which I believe is key especially in the music industry. Throughout my course, I was pushed out of my comfort zone through networking and industry events. As someone naturally introverted, I really developed my self-assurance and now feel confident in professional situations that once would’ve felt daunting.
Upon starting your course, did you have a clear idea of the career path you wanted to follow after UHI Perth?
I did. I knew I wanted to go into music publishing. Before enrolling, I spoke with my lecturer Rik Smernicki about my goals, and he offered fantastic advice and connections that helped steer me in the right direction. The level of support and guidance at UHI was incredible.
Are you currently employed?
After my placement, I was contacted by the people at 23rd Precinct to offer me a full-time position in music publishing and continue on from what I was doing in my placement with them. In my job, I ensure that our catalogue have their works registered correctly on PRS, I also register new works on the system too. I get to do music sync too and help pitch works from our internal catalogue for media use.
Do you feel your studies have helped you with your career? Was there anything you did whilst at UHI Perth that you think helped you secure your job?
Absolutely! Through UHI, I had the opportunity to attend the Resonate music conference, which is organised by the team at 23rd Precinct. My lecturer, Gareth Whitehead, introduced me to Rosie, who I ended up working closely with during my placement. Rosie’s incredible knowledge and experience in music publishing has been a huge inspiration. She’s guided me every step of the way, from understanding the finer details of rights management to developing my confidence in the role. Her mentorship has been invaluable, and she continues to encourage me to grow, learn, and connect with others in the industry. If it wasn’t for UHI, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet Rosie or take the first steps towards the career I have today.
What were the steps you took from graduation to your current role?
Luckily, my current position was offered immediately after graduation, allowing me to transition smoothly from study to full-time employment and continue the work I’d started during my placement.
Where would you like to go with your career in the future?
Every day I’m developing new skills and building industry connections. In the long term, I’d love to work in music supervision, but for now, I’m really content gaining experience in publishing. It’s the perfect foundation for where I want to be.
Did you enjoy studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?
I absolutely loved my time at UHI Perth. I met so many amazing people, including classmates who’ve become lifelong friends, and gained experiences that have genuinely shaped my career. Overall, it’s been life changing!
What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?
Go for it! It’s never too late to start or continue your studies. I took an eight-year break before returning, and my lecturers were incredibly supportive, helping me get back into the rhythm of studying. You’ll meet inspiring people and be given incredible opportunities that can genuinely change your life.
