Student Spotlight - Lorraine Ward

The creative sector continues as a key driver to the local and national economy, contributing richly and fundamentally to cultural identities, so with our help at UHI Perth, you could be on your way to a successful career within one of the most rapidly growing sectors.

The creative economy also contributes to the overall well-being of communities, individual self-esteem and quality of life. This week we met a student who returned to education later in life to fulfil their creative side.

Can you introduce yourself?

Lorraine Ward from Perth.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

I have been studying Art and Contemporary Practices at UHI Perth for the past four years, starting at HNC level and I have now just finished my BA (Hons).

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

As a lifelong resident of Perth, I have always been familiar with Perth College formerly, then UHI Perth. My children also all studied at UHI Perth.

What were you doing before you came to UHI Perth?

I am a mature student, so I had spent a lifetime working in retail and the Insurance industry.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I have always been artistic and creative and always regretted never taking the opportunity to study art when I was younger. I found myself at a critical point in my life where I knew I this was what I had to do.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

My favourite thing about my course would have to be the introduction to new ideas and concepts which I would never have experienced out with this course.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

There have been so many wonderful moments throughout the four years but winning the graduate award for my final showcase was a standout moment for me.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

I have gained an extensive amount of subject knowledge. I have learned new creative techniques which I can use in my practice, I have gained skills in collaborative work and workshop facilitation, I have learned skills relating to working practice within the creative arts industry, and I have gained a huge amount of self confidence in my practice and in myself.

Have you undertaken a placement or work experience whilst at UHI Perth?

Yes, I completed a twelve-week placement at The Walled Garden in Perth, which is a charitable organisation providing therapeutic benefits to mental health and wellbeing through practical and creative activities. I have stayed on at The Walled Garden as a volunteer.

Have your lecturers been supportive during your studies?

Yes, my lecturers have all been very supportive.

You have just successfully finished your end of year graduate showcase – ‘Visualise’ at the Creative Exchange in Perth. How did it go? What did your final project consist of?

The graduate showcase was a great success; everything went to plan (just about) and the opening night brilliant. We had lots of visitors, friends, family and everyone else involved and interested in the event. My final project was based around the concept of ‘Self’. An exploration into my own self and how that manifests into creative forms. My body of work comprised of four sculptures, a film/performance, a painting and an assemblage/painting piece.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

I feel my achievements have been my ability to keep going, even though at times it was very tough. It would have been so easy just to give up and quit, but I had the determination and willpower to carry on. I also achieved good grades throughout which I am very proud of.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

What I like about the Perth campus is the size. It is small in comparison to other locations, so it is not too busy or overwhelming. We were based in the Goodlyburn building, which is old and is shared by multiple facilities, but we made the best of it.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

I have really enjoyed studying at UHI Perth, and I would recommend to anyone thinking about studying. I think my highlights would be the people I have met and the friendships, which will continue now into the future.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of your studies?

Outside of my studies and creative activities, I enjoy being outdoors and keeping fit. I go to boot camp every week which I love, and I also am kept busy with my family and grandchildren.

What are your future career plans?

At this point in time, having just finished four years of study, I am going to take a small break to regather my thoughts. I will carry on volunteering now and creating art, and I hope to move into the art therapy sector. I may decide to go on to do a masters, but that is for the future.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

Just get on with it and do it, you won’t know until you try, and you might regret it if you don’t. It’s not easy, you have to be committed and work hard, but all the effort is worth it when you can say, I did it, myself.

We are still accepting applications for courses starting this September. Find your place at UHI Perth and #ApplyNow >>
