Student Spotlight - Emma McGrath

Did you know that UHI Perth have a Food, Nutrition and Textiles Education degree aimed at those wishing to pursue a career as a Home Economics teacher in a secondary school? This contemporary programme is unique in Scotland as it combines academic study in food, nutrition, textiles and education with vocational training as a teacher in secondary schools within the four-year programme of study.

Following successful competition of the course, you will have the opportunity to educate young people about food and nutrition and help them to understand the connections between what they eat and their health and get the skills to take care of themselves. We had a chat with a student who is currently on this course to find out how she is enjoying it.

BA (Hons) Food, Nutrition and Textiles Education.

Did you consider other universities when you were deciding to study? If so, why did you choose UHI?

I considered different universities; however, the course and the building were a better fit for myself. I was able to gain more knowledge and a better experience with the course offered at UHI.

Why was this right course for you?

It included all the skills I require for my future, and it was able to offer me a teaching course within a regular course.

The lecturers are all friendly and try their best to give us the best learning opportunities and the support given is great. As someone who needs additional support, achieving this was no issue.

For my course, we are required to do an education placement and an industry placement. These are to give us an opportunity to understand more about how it will be once we graduate, as well as giving us the chance to learn things to take on in the future.

Home Economics teacher.

How do you feel your studies will help you in your career progression?

The course is giving me the chance to gain all the required knowledge and skills I need to become a fully qualified teacher.
