Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Finlay McBrearty.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

I'm studying HNC Music Business.

What were you doing before the course?

I was planning on taking a gap, but I have such a passion for music. My friends and I started a band in high school, and I’ve been playing instruments my whole life, so I wanted to surround myself with music and luckily, I managed to get a last-minute placement on the course.

How did you feel when you started UHI Perth?

Good - it's quiet. I wouldn't say it’s easy, but it's not been as challenging as I thought it was going to be. My class is good and there are a lot of friendly people in the class.

How have the lecturers supported you whilst you’ve been on the course?

The lecturers are all very helpful and it’s been smooth sailing for me.

What subjects have you enjoyed on the course?

We've just done a test on the music industry - including the publishing side and the collection societies. We have also learnt how you can collect royalties as an artist, manager and a publisher.

Is there anything that surprised you about the course?

There's nothing really that surprised me about the course but, comparing it to high school, it's a lot different. You've got more responsibility on educating yourself.

What are your plans after you finish the course?

Hopefully I will be selling out stadiums in a couple of years with my band! I’m doing this course to gain as much knowledge as I can.

What advice would you give to someone if they are coming to college for the first time?

Just follow your heart. If you want to practice music, or do anything in the industry, just go for it. Especially here at UHI Perth, where you’ve got top-end studios. There are all the instruments, all the rehearsal rooms, everything you need to pursue a career in music. So, yes, just go for it!
