Student Spotlight - Deni
We are all exposed to so much information in our daily lives that it can be difficult to assess what is real and what is ‘fake’: HNC Social Sciences is the perfect course for students who want to develop the skills to search for the truth.
After realising that school was not the right environment for her, Deni chose to pursue her interests and enrolled at UHI Perth ⬇️
Can you introduce yourself?
My name's Deni and I am studying HNC Social Sciences.
What were you doing before the course, and why did you decide to do it?
Before I started the course, I was in high school, and I really wanted to leave because it was not for me.
I am interested in criminology and part of psychology, so I just felt like this course was right for me as I knew it contained these elements. I started in level six last year and then I continued on to this year.
How did you feel when you started at UHI Perth?
When I started the course, I felt way better than I did in school because you get more support and they treat you like you’re more grown up.
What subjects have you enjoyed on the course?
I've really enjoyed studying psychology and politics.
How do you get on with your classmates?
Very well - they're all nice and understanding and very helpful. Most of the people were in my class last year, but there are some new faces, so that’s been good.
Have you faced any challenges whilst you’ve been on the course?
The amount of work and the deadlines. Especially this year, on the HNC, it's a lot harder than it was last year. So, I would say the amount of coursework has been challenging.
How have the lecturers supported you whilst you’ve been on the course?
All the lecturers have been great and supportive. They will help you whenever you need help and are all very nice.
Do you have any hobbies outside of college?
No, I don't really have any hobbies. I go to work and spend time with my friends and family.
What are you enjoying on the course?
I'm enjoying the group tasks we're doing. Last week, we did a history group task where the entire class was divided into two groups and we had a debate. Some of the lecturers took part as well, so that was something I really enjoyed.
What are your plans after you finish the course?
My plans are to go to university.
What advice would you give to someone if they are coming to college for the first time?
To take it seriously, because you might think that it's not very serious - or not too difficult - but it's a lot more serious and more difficult than you think! Do your reading - you need to study.
