Can you introduce yourself?
Hannah Gilbert from Dunshalt, Fife.
What course are you studying at UHI Perth?
SVQ 3 Social Services (Children and Young People).
How did you hear about UHI Perth?
Through colleagues at work who have completed the same course.
What were you doing before you came to college?
I work at Inch View Nursery in Perth as a Play Assistant.
Why did you decide to pick this course?
So that I can progress my career and become an Early Years Practitioner in the future.
What is your favourite thing about the course?
I enjoyed planning and organising activities for the children – such as the obstacle course and playdough activities – and seeing how much the children enjoyed the activities.
Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?
Learning that childcare isn’t just about teaching children but also observing, listening and learning from them. Also becoming more knowledgeable and confident in my work.
What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?
The course has helped me to improve my skills in dealing with children and helping me gain knowledge of child development, EYFS framework, children’s play patterns, legislation and codes of practice, and having a greater awareness of health, safety and hygiene. I have also learned skills which have helped me to plan child-led experiences and strengthened my ability to communicate with children, parents and colleagues.
Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?
I now have a better understanding of how children learn and communicate – through milestones, play patterns, and observations, and being better able now to support children.
Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?
Yes, I enjoyed studying and carrying out research. Brightspace, the learning platform was also really helpful.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?
I enjoy watching sports – particularly football, going to the theatre, and travelling.
What are your future career plans?
I hope to be an Early Years Practitioner.
And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?
I would say ‘go for it’ and apply to study at UHI Perth. It’s a very worthwhile thing to do, and my Assessor - Allison - was really helpful and supportive throughout my course.
