Student Spotlight - Kathleen Mitchell

Student Spotlight - Kathleen Mitchell

I have wanted to complete this course for some time, because of my position at work, and just never got round to it. However, with the support of the Open Day event at the college, I decided to do it.”

Kathleen talked us through her experience of studying while working in a school ⬇️

Can you introduce yourself?

Kathleen Mitchell from Milnathort, Kinross.

What course are you studying at UHI Perth?

I have been a student on the Social Services (Children and Young People) SVQ 3, which I have just completed.

How did you hear about UHI Perth?

I was looking for courses on the internet and attended an Open Day at UHI Perth.

What were you doing before you came to college?

Working as a Pupil Support Assistant in the local primary school.

Why did you decide to pick this course?

I have wanted to complete this course for some time, because of my position at work, and just never got round to it. However, with the support of the Open Day event at the college, I decided to do it.

What is your favourite thing about the course?

The support I received from Fiona Sherrit was incredible, she was amazing. I went through a very difficult time, losing my mum, and I didn’t think I would have the strength to carry on but Fiona was so kind, caring and supportive.

Has there been any standout/memorable moments from your course?

Yes, meeting up with Fiona to go through the course work. This always made me feel: ‘I can do this’, ‘I can complete this course’. She was inspiring and enthusiastic, which made me feel positive and energised.

What knowledge, skills and experience have you gained from your course that will help you when you leave UHI Perth?

I gained confidence and confirmation that the skills and experience I had required over the years was in line with my course and government guidance. It also refreshed my memory on the courses I had already completed in school - like first aid, speech and language therapy, moving and handling training. Sometimes you don’t think you are doing much but when you sit down and start writing about it, the knowledge that I had was vast.

Any other achievements you have gained on your journey?

Self-regulation, knowing that I’m human and I need to be kind to myself and not to stress so much.

What do you like about the campus/facilities?

It’s very welcoming and friendly. Someone is always there to help you.

Have you enjoyed studying at UHI Perth? Any highlights?

Yes. Highlights would be meeting up with Fiona to go over assessments.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of college?

I play the bagpipes and occasionally cycle.

What are your future career plans?

I have not decided this yet.

And finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at UHI Perth?

Go to an Open Day event, these are the best and everyone is so helpful and friendly. And, if you are lucky enough to be on a course and Fiona Sherrit is your work-based assessor, you will be inspired!

With on-the-job training, students can gain this SVQ Level 3 recognised qualification without studying full time. Funding can be applied for through Skills Development Scotland.

The course is designed to allow students to register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) and is run by highly skilled assessors with extensive experience in all aspects of working with children. Students will learn the underpinning childhood theory that supports their work in practice.
