What’s your name and where are you from?
Lucas Graham from Dundee.
What course are you studying at UHI Perth?
BA (Hons) Visual Communication and Design.
Did you consider other universities when you were deciding to study? If so, why did you decide to choose UHI Perth?
I considered a few courses around Scotland to pursue my interest in visual design, but after completing my HNC in Visual Communication at Perth, I chose to stay. The facilities, network and opportunities that they had to offer for me were a very large part of why I chose UHI.
Why was this right course for you?
I was experimenting with graphic design in my own time while halfway through an unrelated apprenticeship and eventually ended up leaving that to study visual comms full-time. It was the obvious better path for me, and - to this day - that was one of the best decisions of my life. I still have the last year left and I’ve yet to think this isn’t for me..
What do you think about the style of teaching and the support you’ve received from tutors and lecturers?
While unconventional compared to traditional university courses, the style of teaching at UHI adapts to support the entire course. In our case, it was blended learning where we only attended the classes in person once a week. Personally, this has made me very aware of time across the course and how to effectively manage my deadlines and submissions. Despite the one-day-a-week style, the lectures and content of the course have not been affected.
I’ve received a lot of support over the years that has pushed my skills further every month. Through word-of-mouth conversations, to full blown invitational events, the continued support of the lecturers is a key part of where I am now.
Have you undertaken any student placements?
Not officially, but the UNESCO internship was only possible through UHI.
What career direction would you like to take after studying?
Start on the graphic design career ladder. Whether that’s through agencies or freelance, time will tell. I’m not worried though, that’s for sure.
How do you feel your studies will help you in your career progression?
I wouldn’t be able to do what I do if I didn’t do this course.
What are your favourite things about UHI?
Screen printing facilities - they’re rather good, and more importantly one of the only places to print textiles.
Network - the amount of people in and around Perth connected through UHI in one way or another is a foot in the door for many opportunities.
